Tour and demonstration schedules

Tour and demonstration schedules

Regular demonstrations take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Programs cover milling, spinning and weaving, illustrating life between 1850 and 1860.

If you want to pair a demonstration with time in the preserve, arrive during the mill’s opening hours and allow for the program before exploring the grounds. The Graue Mill visiting guide covers other details that can help you plan your visit.

The mill’s story reaches back to 1849, when Frederick Graue and William Asche purchased land along Salt Creek to build a gristmill. It opened in April 1852, and the Graue family operated it for 70 years.

The Forest Preserve District acquired the mill in 1933 and decided the following year to restore it to its mid-1800s operations. Graue Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 1975, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers recognized it as an Illinois Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1981.

Check the mill’s schedule separately from the forest preserve’s hours: the preserve’s daily access window does not mean the mill is open every day. Keep in mind that the seasonal availability of accessible portable toilets follows the mill’s mid-April-to-mid-November period.
